Do Not Blame the System or Others: Accept Responsibility By: Harrison Barnes
Career Mission's Chief Executive Officer, A. Harrison Barnes as he discussed how we need to accept responsibility rather than blame others for our situation.
Regardless of what is wrong in our lives, most of us spend a good portion of our time blaming others for whatever situation we are in. Every single one of us is seeking to blame others for the things that we do not like about ourselves or our lives, instead of facing the responsibility for our issues.
Harrison strongly believes that the system is rarely responsible for our problems. You cannot blame the system for where you are in your life. One of the greatest mistakes many people make is to believe that their careers have been controlled by the system. This is not necessarily the case. You are accountable for the things which have happened to you by virtue of the system in which you have chosen to participate.
We also try and blame other individuals for the circumstances we find ourselves in. Just as “the system” is an easy scapegoat for the things we do not like about our lives, ourselves, or the negative situations that we face, so too are other individuals. However, holding others entirely responsible for our condition can serve to disempower us, placing the power over our own lives and conditions in the hands of someone else. We should always believe that our lives are under our control and not the control of someone else.
Instead of blaming the system, it might be a good idea for you to accept some responsibility for this situation as well. One of the best ways to be happy, enjoy your career and experience success in your life is to not blame the system or others for the situation you are in and, instead, to accept full responsibility for where you are today. By accepting responsibility you are much more likely to make better decisions that will lead you to greater success in the future
"Thank you for helping me with my resume and cover letter. Over the past few weeks, I have submitted my documents to online databases and received quite a few responses to them. I am even going in for two interviews next week. I am so pleased. I hope I get an offer!" —C.B. , Detroit, MI
"I've just finished going over the resume and cover letter. They both sound great. I'm very pleased with how it's turned out; you've managed to convey my experience in a very professional tone and yet still sound like me. I've never thought of having a 'voice' in my paperwork, but apparently I do, and you've captured it." —L.B. , Boulder, CO
