The Danger of Judging Others
By: Harrison Barnes

Career Mission's Chief Executive Officer, A. Harrison Barnes, in a webinar discussed how it is not correct to judge others for their circumstances.

Harrison strongly believes that if we judge others and exclude others due to these judgments, then these judgments may turn around and come back on us as well.  Harrison experienced this in his own life where the people were extremely judgmental of his family; however the same things that they judged and excluded them for came back to give them the very same sort of identities in their own lives. People are often hypocritical–nobody is perfect, no matter how hard they may pretend to be.

Harrison also believes that love and happiness cannot be purchased, no matter how much money someone may have. Referring to the novel The Great Gatsby, Harrison brings out three important points: (1) acceptance cannot be bought and (2) people cling to status and in the process ignore the world around them, and (3) people are often very hypocritical.

Harrison’s childhood experience taught him that acceptance cannot be bought. He also learned that people often cling to status while ignoring the world around them, and that people are often hypocritical.  The fact that those people who shunned Harrison’s family, due to forces largely beyond their control, ultimately experienced the same issues in their own lives was very instructive for Harrison.

The more we judge others for their circumstances, the more we are likely to suffer from those same circumstances.

"I've just finished going over the resume and cover letter. They both sound great. I'm very pleased with how it's turned out; you've managed to convey my experience in a very professional tone and yet still sound like me. I've never thought of having a 'voice' in my paperwork, but apparently I do, and you've captured it."
